Kawasaki, Japan – June 5, 2025: Media Links, a leading provider of IP media transport solutions, announced today a technology and application proof-of-concept in collaboration with SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation and Seiko Solutions Inc.
The three companies successfully demonstrated the use of Precision Time Protocol (PTP) to achieve precise synchronization of broadcast signal transmission over a long-distance Ethernet connection between Tokyo and Kagoshima. The trial employed Media Links’ MDP3020 SFN modular IP media gateway. Until now, synchronous transmission of broadcast signals over such long-distance Ethernet circuits was considered impractical. This advancement paves the way for improving coverage and spectral efficiency in digital terrestrial broadcasting systems and IP-based distribution networks.
Background
Digital terrestrial broadcasting serves a critical public function, delivering essential information such as news and emergency updates. However, long-distance signal transmission via wireless communication poses challenges due to the high cost of relay station installation, geographical constraints, and limited suitable locations.
To address these limitations, SKY Perfect JSAT has been exploring more flexible and cost-effective solutions using Ethernet circuits to enable low-latency, high-quality broadcast signal transmission over long distances.
Project Overview
For this initiative, Media Links supplied STL/TTL transmission solutions (Note 1) that integrate IP/PTP technology, using the MDP3020 SFN and RPTP devices (Note 2) to correct PTP traffic across Ethernet lines and enable high-accuracy time synchronization. The Grandmaster TS2910 (Note 3), manufactured by Seiko Solutions Inc., was deployed to provide the precise timing source.
Working with SKY Perfect JSAT, the project achieved high-precision PTP-synchronized transmission across a nearly 1,000 km Ethernet line, an important step toward building more robust and adaptable broadcast infrastructures.
- Note 1: A system that utilizes IP networks and high-precision synchronization technology (PTP) to stably and efficiently transmit broadcast signals from a broadcasting station to a transmission station or between transmission stations.
